A report issued this week by Colorado College claims that climate change is happening much faster rate than most believe. Aspen’s temperature could be as much as 18 degrees warmer by 2085, the report states, with 43 percent less snow pack, vastly decreasing the length of Colorado’s ski season.

Thus begins our attempt to provide some feedback on the local food scene—you know, that thing people are always talking about but almost never write about. I urge everybody to use Aspen Post as a way to have opinions and information bubble up from the people who do the actual eating.

Skico co-developer Starwood closed Tuesday on a $355 million deal to take over Mammoth Mountain real estate development from—who else?—Intrawest, though Intrawest gleaned a $60 million pre-tax profit; a 15 percent interest in the Mammoth joint-venture; and “an ongoing role as development and sales manager in the build-out of the master-planned resort.”

Those who oppose growth in Aspen have this really big idea for stopping it cold. It’s called a moratorium, as in moratorium is less. When you come down to it, a moratorium is not a policy at all—it’s more a command to stop shooting first and ask questions later.
But a group of more than two-score citizens—in white T-shirts with the warm and fuzzy sentiment “I (Heart) Aspen”—besieged a City Council meeting Monday only to leave en masse when the real business of government continued apace at its normal snail’s pace.
"It's very disappointing to be sitting here now,” said Councilor Jack Johnson, “where there's barely a T-shirt in the room.”

The random celebrity sighting is a part of life Aspen locals tend to dismiss as insignificant. “No big deal,” they say. “They’re no different than anyone else.” But they are different. They’re famous and we’re not!

Something way way beyond disturbing is happening to cell phones in the valley right before our ears. Cell phones, you see, are starting to sound like actual telephones.
Just when we were all getting used to annoying ring tones from rock ’n’ roll and every conceivable genre, more and more of the plain old populi are moving away from pop music and going back to cell phone rings that sound like…plain old telephones.
Was this inevitable? I think not. But it is meaningful.

Aspen Shortsfest has been a blast. I haven’t even gone to as many programs as I would like, but I have enjoyed what I have caught.
I’ve been to three competition programs at the Wheeler. I also went to a free discussion on music editing for film and television. It was hosted by Sue Shufro, a local who telecommutes to New York and was on the local filmmakers jury with me. Very cool and nice chick. Also, knows her stuff when it comes to music editing. She has worked on Lord of the Rings, Y Tu Mama Tambien, The Game, and many other known and unknown titles.

Bob Rafelson is all but ubiquitous around Aspen: sometimes you see him with his family, sometimes alone, sometimes dancing spontaneously with a woman on the sidewalk outside the Hotel Jerome. In many respects, he represents the maverick spirit of a town and an industry that are no longer what they used to be. The fact that his old pal and colleague Jack Nicholson still comes here represents the same historical cachet. Rebels who have made it in the real world have a special place in Aspen.

How does a growing family exist in Aspen without a trust fund? A perplexing question, indeed. When I was single, it wasn’t so difficult. As long as I was willing to live with four people in a 400 square foot studio, rent was affordable. Once married, it was still doable, though financially detrimental. My wife and I decided to suck it up and pay a ridiculous rent for a small apartment so that we could stay within Aspen city limits. After all, we moved to Colorado from Florida to live in Aspen, not Basalt or Carbondale or Glenwood Springs.
