Country's Dad Signs Into Aspen
May 5th, 2006 at 06:43am Post Staff 43
A Society of Cincinnati document signed by the society’s President, George Washington, and Secretary, Henry Knox, is making it’s way to Aspen before the weekend. Rick Schultz of The Autograph Source acquired the document, which enabled a group of men to run the fledgling country from the end of the Revolutionary War to the time George Washington officially took office as President of the United States of America.
Additional Information from Rick Schultz:
Like Cincinnatus, the hero of Classical antiquity whose conduct he most admired, Washington had the wisdom to give up power when he could have been crowned a king. He left Annapolis and went home to Mount Vernon with the fixed intention of never again serving in public life. This one act, without precedent in modern history, made him an international hero. In 1787, Washington ended his self-imposed retirement and traveled to Philadelphia to attend a convention assembled to recommend changes to the Articles of Confederation. He was unanimously chosen to preside over the Constitutional Convention, a job that took four months. With his influence on these two organizations, Washington was able to get the Constitution approved.
A beautiful, ornate document. This is our favorite Washington document because of all of the symbolism and beauty in the etchings. The ink on some of the text has faded, but the Washington and Knox signatures present very well, as do the intricate copper engravings. Overall condition is very good, with even toning throughout the document.
The Autograph Source is located at 601 East Hopkins Avenue.
