I've Lost My Virginity, Finally

May 21st, 2006 at 05:14pm Sara G. 12

Gun shooting virginity that is. This past Friday I shot a gun for the first time. It was an assault rifle actually. I went to a bbq on a ranch midvalley. We were several miles back form highway 82. Horses, barn, babbling brook, the works. It was gorgeous.
I have never been a fan of guns. They just kind of scare me because they are so powerful and yet, easy to use and readily available. My dad had guns around the house growing up so I had held one before, but I have no idea where he kept the ammo. I don't think I ever saw him shoot one. It was more of a collection of guns, to go with his fountain pen collection and massive personal library.

I thought I would feel icky after shooting the rifle. From the inside I would have some sort of reaction that "this just doesn't feel right. It's not for me."
My first reaction was "I can't hear." The rifle was really loud and my ears were ringing for 5-10 minutes afterward. Then, I was kind of neutral after that. "Alright, alright. That's what it feels like. How's the bbq coming?" Also, admittedly I was frustrated I didn't hit the cup at which I was aiming.
I still have a fear about guns...that they are dangerous and only the most responsible among us should have access to them. I can't imagine what is fun about hunting animals. Yeah, shooting a gun at a target would fall under athletic and sporty, providing a rush. However, any fun that provides would be overshadowed by the blood of a dead animal for me.

I take it you were at a vegen BBQ?? Becasue if there was meat there, someone had to kill it. So by your standards, only ruthless coldblooded "killers" would shoot an animal while as long as you kill the cow with a steel bolt between the eyes its ok. (Yes, it still bleeds out all its blood.)

I think your father did you a dis-service by not educating you on firearms. The fact that they were in your home and you were never taught gun safety is amazing to me. Owning guns is a right and those that have them need to be responsible with them.

I think its funny how we demonize guns and say that only "certain" people should have access to them. Funny, I never heard that about vehicles, which claim thousands more lives a year from reckless behavior.

    Just my two cents.

It was not a vegan bbq, but I am a vegetarian. I have thought of that hypocrisy before. Thanks for the comment.
