Get It While You Can...Go See "Love, Janis"!

“Never Compromise, because that’s all you get”-states Janis as her alter ego Janis Joplin bursts on to stage with “Piece of My heart”. So goes the opening of the phenomenally talented “Love, Janis” presentation by Theatre Aspen. I caught the toe-tapping/hand-clapping performance last night at Rio Grande Park in Aspen.
In “Love, Janis” actress Elizabeth Rainer embraces the innocence of Port Arthur, Texas soon to be star; while the show-stopping talent of Andra MacCracken channeled the legendary songstress from beyond the grave. “Love, Janis” is the story of the rise and ultimate death of Janis Joplin thru the adaptation of the book “Love, Janis” written by her sister and conceived thru the many letters Janis wrote to her family. Via the letters we discover the ever changing emotions of the artist that include her fear from the onset when she signs one letter home “Help, Janis” to the humor she develops from with in as she writes “…I’ve become Haight-Ashbury’s first pin up”. We also journey with her as the pressure builds in becoming a star and she conceives that she has become a caricature of herself when she writes” …I got to go to change into Janis Joplin-she is upstairs in my dressing room”.
Theatre Aspen’s presentation of “Love, Janis” includes a psychedelic set to see just for the price of admission-along with costumes that will inspire you to start digging in the racks of you favorite vintage store; and if that isn’t enough for you the supporting musicians with the show-stopping talent of Andra MacCracken will have you jumping out of your seats!
For this blogger “Love, Janis” reminded me of my youth when scarves were my clothing of choice, laughter was my entertainment and life was about where I was headed and how I was going to get there. Take it from Janis “Get while you can!” and go see Theatre Aspen presentation of “Love, Janis”, it’s a must see…and I can’t wait to see it again!
