In March of 2002, “A$pen the Series™” began as the vision of Aspen local creator and producer, Greg Simmons, after he had been a patron of the HBO U.S. Comedy Arts Festival for nine years. "A$pen" is an ensemble cast comedy which is currently being webcast at www.AspenTheSeries.com.
Simmons idea was to create a cast of characters that is organically rooted in Aspen, not just from a local cool perspective but also from the jet set perspective: glamorous, glitzy, sexy, exciting and fun – and to have the characters interact in a compelling but funny way, much like the hit sitcom "Friends."

We were joined for a discussion of The Beat Generation by Kent Reed and members of his Hudson Reed Ensemble playing the parts of writers and poets Jack Kerouac (Kim Nuzzo), Allen Ginsberg (Ed Foran), and Lawrence Ferlinghetti (Lee Sullivan). Also joining the conversation were Lisa Zimet of Zele and two members of the Aspen community, Cy Coleman and Tricia McKenzie.

Athens, Georgia…wireless.
Ashland, Oregon…wireless.
Long Beach, California…wireless.
Seattle, Washington…wireless.
Vail…soon to be wireless.
Aspen…not so much.
Which begs the question, why hasn’t the city of Aspen gone wireless?

If nothing defines a dictator quite like his ambitions to obliterate a race, color, or creed, then nothing has brought more definition to the 21st Century than the attempt by one creed to wipe out another.
That’s why we here in the Land of the Free have to keep our focus on Islamic Fundamentalists determined to destroy us because we don’t worship the same God in the same way that they do. Hurricanes and tsunamis do not name their victims in advance, but the Islamic radicals have enough faith in Allah to let the rest of us know they want to kill us dead. So there should be no surprises here.

With all the attention paid in Aspen to little things like power politics, premiers of major operas, and sundry and sybaritic food and wine indulgences, it’s easy to forget that Aspen and Snowmass answer to a higher power not only when it comes to doing good, but also when it comes to getting well.
Over the next week or so, first in Aspen and then in Snowmass, the Roaring Fork Valley will be transformed into a place where it will be hard to get a burger and fries without feeling extensive refried karmic guilt. That’s because the newly renamed Aspen Center for Integral Health (ACIH) and the Snowmass Wellness Experience are kicking in back-to-back in a manner that makes the valley the center of the universe when it comes to doing what’s right your body, mind, and spirit.
And lest all that goodness give you a headache, keep in mind that great food is very much on the menu at both events. (A body’s got to eat, right?)

Mayor Helen Klanderud is still trying to find out who is behind a survey about the future of Aspen taken over the phone under false pretenses.
Sitting outside Zele’s Café Monday afternoon, the Mayor told the story of talking to a survey firm named CRG—CRG Research, as it turns out—taking a survey for the Aspen Planning Commission. Her Honor informed the market researcher of two important facts.
“I’m the Mayor of Aspen,” she said, “and there is no such commission.”

I like Kevin Costner a lot as an actor, even though I am dog-tired of him playing that same old, same old reluctant hero over and over again. (I get it, Kevin, okay? You really actually don’t want to be a hero, right? Got it. Now please stop.) I like him enough to be standing there at Belly Up in the wee small hours Friday night, shouting up at the stage: “Things are getting better. They’re getting better ever day.”
