Part-Time 'Locals' A Full-Time Pain In Aspen

I had this strange out-of-body experience just the other night at a nice home in Aspen. I met an architect who had been coming here since 1968, one who fondly recalled coming around the S-curve in a blizzard to see what he called “the proper entrance” to the town he still loves.

He told me further that I could not possibly understand the flap over the ill-fated “Resnick Auditorium” within the Papecke Building at the Aspen Institute because I had only lived in the valley for three short years. I told him that I had written stories about the Paepckes and even counted their descendants among my friends. I told him I was not unmindful of the spiritual side of the mind-body-spirit revolution the Paepckes brought to Aspen more than fifty years ago. Without the Paepckes, I told him, I for one wouldn’t have come here at all.

No matter. Nothing I said could dissuade the keep of the flame. I was ineligible to have an opinion and so would it forever remain.

Aspen Popular On The Net

Video on the internet is all the rage. These days all you need is a camera and a computer and you can upload your movie to the internet for the whole world to see. Literally, millions of video clips are uploaded each day. Sure, most suck, but there are certainly a few diamonds in the rough.

Join The Revolution

Biofuel? Photovoltaic? Wind energy credits? Carbon footprint?

Whether you know the meaning of these terms or not, make your way to the Cooper Street Mall on Saturday between noon and 4:30 p.m. for an education in renewable energy.

Aspen Renewable Energy Day (AREDAY) invites the public to “participate and join a local, regional and, national energy revolution promoting effective solutions to the urgent challenges of global warming.”

A Code Green Initiative: Tax Private Air Travel

Following up to AREDAY and some good recent environmentally themed blogs by Michael Conniff (who coined "Code Green") and alpha 6, I wanted to put forward an initiative.

It's so simple and logical, I apologize if someone has proposed this before. Regardless, when you look at the data and see our community's stated priorities, it needs to be done.

Dear Diary

Keeping a journal can be what ever you want it to be. Write about your feelings. Write about the abstract. Log in your miles for the day. Whatever. If you feel better when you’re done it’s probably a good thing. Though I think it was good old fashioned prune juice that actually made me feel better, I’m sure I felt some sort of confessional quality after writing, “nothing yet,” and turning it in to my teacher.

CON GAMES: Code Green

The imminence of Aspen Renewable Energy Day (AREDAY) this Saturday noon on the Mill Street Mall—and a stream of green guests on my “Con Games” radio program on KNFO this week—set my mind to thinking that what we environmental wackos really need is a good scare.

You know: something to connect the dots between national security, our dependence on oil, and alternative energy sources. Something like the color-coded alert system that the Bush Administration so misused for political purposes before it all but disappeared altogether.

Why not “Code Green”?

Magnuson's Green Platform Addresses Big Threat With Small But Powerful Action

One reason why I said I supported Rick for Sheriff is that--despite his underdog status--he brings competition, and ultimately, change to an office that is basically on autopilot.

My Three-Step Plan for Greening the Sheriff's Office

With the Canary Initiative, progressive businesses like the Aspen Ski Company and innovative organizations and people throughout the county, Pitkin is becoming a global showcase for renewable energy and efficiency. Green is now part of our community’s essence-and the Sheriff’s office is no exception. Green can be more than just the color of our uniforms.

Crime in the Valley? Who You Gonna Call?

I for one am getting tired of trying to guess which laws are going to be enforced and which ones don’t fit into the “philosophy” of our wise and all knowing Sheriff Braudis. The way I understand it is that the Sheriff is supposed to enforce ALL the laws that serve the community and if the people don’t like the laws, there is a system to change those laws. When one person gets into a position that they decide they know better then the people which laws should be enforced, especially when that person WORKS and is elected by the people, then its time for the people to stand up and let them know we do not live in a socialist dictatorship society. If our elected officials do not or can not do the job they were elected to do, then maybe it is time to for the people to make a choice as to what they want. In the meantime, watch your back and be aware of what is going on around you, especially if you are riding public transportation late at night. If something does happen, fight like hell but don’t cling to hope that the Sheriff will be coming to your rescue…it would interrupt one of his dinner parties and we just can’t have that.
