DrBill's Aspen FilmFest 2006 Blog Day 3

September 28th, 2006 at 10:40am DrBill 180

Things are ramping up. There are four films in Aspen today and five on Friday! I'll see them all and let you know.

Todays slate includes SMILING IN A WAR ZONE, 12:00 PM, a true story from director Simone Aaberg Kaern, about the dream of flying becoming a shared reality.

Mid-day update . . . This first film today, SMILING IN A WAR ZONE, is a refreshing true story. Dane, Simone Aaberg Kaern, a female pilot is passionate about the freedom to fly as an absolute right! Simone had been moved by the story of a 17 year-old Afgan girls dream to be a fighter pilot. Simone plots to pilot her own small canvas fuselaged single-engine plane from Denmark to Kabul, Afghanastan. The ensuing tension, danger and stress along the way are incredibly and palpably portrayed! Seriously, I was getting stressed out just watching this! Simone is a demonstration of persistence, determination and lives a never-say-never attitude and does not take, "no", for an answer, not even from the US Air Force!
This a magical film portrayed with humor, passion and guts!

This addresses the question I've asked myself at various times in life, "What am I afraid of?' The response is always to face my fear and do it anyway!

Simone and the Afgan girl, face a lot and learn much about their dreams, limitations and making a difference!
This was the only local screening of this film, so if you didn't see it, you missed out! I could see this documentary being used in mentorship of young women especially!

The second film today, screening at the Wheeler at 2:30 PM is the local documentary LOST COWBOYS, about our valley's disappearing ranches.

Wow, this week is getting away from me already, but what an enriching experience! One of the things that I most appreciate and love about film is the personal expansion that I experience as the essence of a film is integrated into my consciousness! Is that too woo-woo for you at this hour? Too bad for you and you'd know what I am referring to, especially if you had the privilege of seeing yesterday's Aspen FilmFest 2006 offerings!
I have to admit that I missed the Aspen screening of "Beyond the Call", which I plan to see in Glenwood Springs on Sunday at 7:30PM at the Springs Theatre and "Driving Lessons", due to a "Buddy" experience as in, The Buddy Program. More on that in future blogs here.
I did see "Live and Become" and was indescribably moved by this epic film! I am humbled by this story, acting, direction, cinematography and production. If you did not see this last night, I highly recommend that you get yourself to the Springs Theatre in Glenwood Springs on Saturday for the 7:00 PM show. You will not regret it and you will be missing a very important experience if you miss it! Do you hear me? See this film!

Third up is, GOD GREW TIRED OF US, 5:30 PM, another true story, from co-directors Christofer Quinn and Tommy Walker. Described as moving and mind-expanding. Check the FilmFest program for a preview.

The last film of the evening is, AFTER THE WEDDING, 8:30 PM, a danish film from director, Susanne Bier. Af"ter the Wedding plumbs the deep waters of family - exploring how we define it and how circumstances can reshape it."

How will we be moved today? Check in tomorrow!
