Hunter S. Thompson’s 1970 Run For Sheriff

October 27th, 2006 at 12:25pm Keith Hemstreet 8

With all the hype surrounding the Pitkin County Sheriff’s race, I thought it would be entertaining to take a look back at the last time Aspen politics stole the national media spotlight, the 1970 race between Carrol D. Whitmire and Freak Party candidate Hunter S. Thompson.

When the dust settled, Thompson found himself defeated, having lost the election by a narrow margin.  In this second clip, Thompson explains why he ran for Sheriff and his take on the death of the “American Dream.”
