Hell came in various ways Tuesday to the parts of Garfield County along Interstate 70 as state and local police set up roadblocks and checkpoints to apprehend the man suspected of shooting a State Patrol officer Brian Koch on a country road in Rifle the night before.
The result: suspect Steven Joseph Appl, 33, killed himself in the backseat of a car driven by a woman just before 7 PM Tuesday night at a checkpoint at the intersection of Dry Hollow and Divide Creek Roads.

Quite honestly, this appears to encompass the entire spectrum of viable choices in the upcoming elections, when party affiliation is concerned. I am certain there are good and honorable Republicans and Democrats, on a specific basis. However, both major parties, are deserving of something more, than scathing commentary.

The latest spate of campaign ugliness--surprise?--stretches all the way from Rush Limbaugh to Eagle County, Colorado, where a candidate for County Commissioner stands anonymously accused of "living with a black man that had past drug convictions and child support issues."

"I came into Zele today and I didn’t have any meetings," says Michael Conniff during an interview at Zele Community Table. "In the course of a few hours I saw at least ten people who I’ve done business with. That’s what’s so great about Aspen. There is a center to it. If you come down here you’ll see everyone you want to see, and everyone you don’t want to see. Most people here see themselves as being part of something special. I hope I never leave."

Wharf Rat has brought to fore, a single issue problem, as an example of negative change in our culture; substance abusers have no responsibility for their actions. The suppliers or the supplies are to blame. Imagine this logic: the dog made me step in the poop, well OK the poop made me step in the poop. Yet unlike the substance abuser, the example does not willfully step into the poop, a marked difference from the substance abuser who activel seeks the supplier. If that is P. C. it must now stand for Poppy Cock -- absolute rubbish.

Pitkin County Sheriff Bob Braudis is a legend and an icon--but is he a liar to boot?
When asked point-blank if he did drugs during "Squirm Night" last week on GrassRoots TV, the Sheriff replied: "Not since I've been Sheriff."
Truth or dare? The Sheriff has been able to get away with saying just about anything in five terms in office, but this time around it's different, thanks in part to the challenge of Aspen Police Community Safety Officer Rick Magnuson. Has the Sheriff done drugs? That's still an open question after The Aspen Times printed online comments Sunday that indicate fiction may be stranger than the truth.

Wonder of wonders, this is a subject I have done extensive reading on. The problem is very widespread, and it ain't the least bit amusing. On top of that, the recent influx of more and more illegals is adding a lot of fuel to an already very dangerous "fire." These are extremely violent groups, and their violence is spreading out of the ghetto and into many "nicer" neighorhoods all around the country. Hmm. Aspen qualifies as a "nicer" neighborhood, does it not?
In fact, while I am sitting here typing away, I must tell you right up front that while I still favor Braudis for Sheriff, I was not aware that there was "tagging" going on in town. This revelation changes my thinking in a big way. In fact, it is likely that unfortunately the old way of dealing with law enforcement in the county may well have to be overhauled, dramatically, and with no time wasted.

"America May Be Doing It Quietly, But It's Happening"
The following article is by Jonathan V. Last. Feb. 12, 2006
There's a wonderful scene in the movie "Traffic" in which a captured drug kingpin, played by Miguel Ferrer, is being interrogated by two federal agents. Ferrer says to them disdainfully: "You people are like those Japanese soldiers left behind on deserted islands who think that World War II is still going on. Let me be the first to tell you, your government surrendered this war a long time ago."

Perhaps it is time for people to rise up and say, "this is my country, that is my government, that party of republicans is not mine... and that party of democrats is not mine, and those choices our President is making are not my choices!"

It was the kind of day that makes you happy you don’t live in Cleveland. The Aspen sky was blue. The air was cool, crisp, clean. I was seated outside the Ruby Park station, enjoying a coffee, waiting on the 4:20 Hunter Creek bus.
One bus after another pulled into the station. Carbondale, Snowmass, Hunter Creek. Not one turned off the engine. I assumed they would eventually flip the ignition, but the engines kept rumbling, fumes tumbling. After a few minutes I had to step inside the station to keep from being asphyxiated by the exhaust. If the yellow canary emblem on the side of the bus had been an actual living bird, it would have fallen from its perch, dead.
