An Email To Con Man

November 5th, 2006 at 10:34am Michael Conniff 2

It occurs to me that our world is so rife with difficulties, and problems both multitudinous, and gravely threatening, coming in from all angles, night and day, day in and day out...that you have hit upon both a well spring of controversy, no matter the subject, as well as a form of unparalleled job security...given that nobody tries to exterminate you some fine day.  Investing in a pair of those bicycle racing rear view mirrors that attach to one's crash helmet (if you are given to wearing a helmet?..if indeed you are also given to traveling around by bicycle?) might not be the worst idea to ever come down the pike.  In fact, wearing a bicycle helmet even if you don't own a bicycle, might not be a bad idea come to think of it....
Some of the people you've chosen to step-on-toes-Katy-bar-the-door, are almost "religious" in their commitment to having uncompromised freedom to enjoy whatever kind of narcotics suit their fancy.  As with most "religious" fanatics, they are potentially dangerous.  I only remind you of this, because of the history of drastic acting-out that has characterized Aspen for all of the 40 plus years I have been observing it.  Religionists, whatever their stripe, frankly scare me....and they should elicit at least a modicum of the same reaction from you.  Aspen is a wonderful, beautiful, often exciting place, but it has an overabundance of very wierd people living in it, and I urge you not to lose sight of that fact.

I don't get it Michael - is this a suggestion or a threat or an observation from a onlooker? you might want to ask rick to run a background check on this wacko.

Looks to me like some kind of november surprise the day before the big election you have invested so much emotion into. not that it matters but when did you get this email?

I like how you desperately tried to rope the county commisioner canidates being interviewed this morning into your big controversy. they both declined, and clearly stated their support for braudis.

Is this the final suicide mission to unseat the sheriff? Or will you blow yourself up in front of the courthouse tomorrow morning after shouting 'rick is great!'?

    don't do it, man.

[is this a suggestion or a threat or an observation from a onlooker?]

The email is not a direct threat, but it is an admonishment to increase personal safety. If it's true that Michael's outspoken challenge of Braudis' drug law enforcement has sent tremors of resentment into the valley's larger drug using community that could threaten Michael's safety, the suggestion that he wear a bicycle helmet equipped with a rear-view mirror is as bizarre as it is useless.

How about a Concealed Carry Permit and a Glock?

What am I saying? Michael's got to be anti-gun...

    Never mind.

    Cheers,

The Pitkin County Commissioners have some budget oversight over the Sheriff's Office--oversight, God forbid, that they refuse to use.

My sense from both Rachel Richards and Jim True this morning that it is still political suicide to oppose (or even criticize Sheriff Bob. Rachel's answer to the parade of negative statistics that describe the Sheriff's reign--"I disagree"--was devoid of any mitigating circumstances or statistics.

I said: "You have to disagree with facts" but neither candidate came up with any. Thus the selective outrage in Pitkin County: more concern over the S-curve than deaths by drug abuse.
