In the Aspen mystery DROP DEAD BEAUTIFUL by Michael Conniff, ex-prosecutor Arnold Bagdikian laments, albeit briefly, the world of corporate riches that he left behind in New York when he hightailed it out of town for Aspen. The reminder: a disturbing visit to the big-shot NYC offices of Bruckman, the lawyer for the O’Kells who once tried to buy him off without him even knowing it.
Bagdikian wants to know which of the O’Kells is behind the death of Sam Albright, the “beautiful” girlfriend of the title who dropped dead one night when somebody slit her throat to get at The Bag Man. He finds out the answer is Diana Campobello, just another billionaire ex-nun just like her sister, Eleanor O’Kell, the radical eugenicist who produced the test-tube babies who now want their share of the family fortune. The O’Kells put the fun in dysfunctional.

Majik Kahhak: MK: You get tired of technicalities, all that is proportions, sizes, and placements—any mistake has to do with one of those. You keep correcting, and I just don’t believe in correcting. We are used to fixing in this culture. Fix, fix, fix we think it’s a high act but it’s not—it’s a functional act. Every now and then you might need to fix something. Conventional art is about fixing. It’s linear, and life is three-dimensional and not linear. Art is really about a state of consciousness. A higher place than ordinary functioning so we have to approach it from that place. At least, it’s not an ordinary level of functioning. Something happens.

It’s the holidays and Aspen, if you haven’t noticed, is about to bust at the seams. I too, you will soon notice, am about to bust at the seams.
In all honesty, there is little I enjoy about the holidays since moving to Aspen. Okay, I do enjoy the lights and the snow and sight of the giant Christmas tree outside the Sardy House that I can see from my bedroom window, but the holidays mean something else entirely to those who live and work in Aspen, or any town that derives the bulk of its revenue from tourism.

Up to 3,000 skiers bound for Aspen had to change their flights or switch to cars, but only a handful canceled, said Bill Tomcich, president of Stay Aspen Snowmass, a central reservations center. National coverage of the blizzard may lure other skiers to Colorado, he said. "The value is immeasurable in terms of the awareness of how great the skiing is in Colorado," Tomcich said.
This seems like wishful thinking to me. Good coverage would lure skiers, the kind that DIA got will make people think twice about flying into Colorado knowing that if a storm comes in they could be spending several nights at the airport and not skiing. I bet they are thinking, hey, the snow out west is great…never heard of Salt Lake or Calgary having problems at their airports, lets go skiing there!

A gripping war film with a powerful message, Days of Glory recounts the largely forgotten story of the Algerian, Moroccan and Tunisian recruits who bravely fought for France during WWII. Valiant soldiers, they were treated as second-class citizens by their "Mother" country, denied the leave, food rations and feminine companionship their French counterparts enjoyed.
