Recent events point to an imminent US attack on Iran…
Government and media propaganda on how Iran constitutes a threat to America and Israel is increasing. The US Navy recently conducted its largest show of force in the Gulf since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, with 15 ships, 125 aircraft and 13,000 sailors taking part in an exercise within a few dozen miles of Iran's coast. The US is also sending Patriot anti-missile systems to the region. There is buzz on the Internet about “Operation Bite.”

This week I screwed up as a father. I think I’ve been a darn good Daddy, excellent, in fact, but this is my first experience with a child and I suppose you’re bound to blow it at some point.

Dear friends:
I pass very difficult time and till now I don't have any solution for me or my children. The situation becomes more and more serious and I don't know what can I do. In Baghdad, the U.S. or Iraqis army closed the streets and the people, especially the young men, run away from them because they arrest most men as suspicious persons. If taken, the men will be in prison for a long time and they must pay the police to get out. When families see any US or Iraqi tanks, they get their sons, between the ages of 18-30 years, out of the place. It's awful to watch the army or the terrorist.

Can anyone tell me why it is that you can't find a bar to call "home" in Aspen unless you drink martinis and bleed champagne? What happened to the funky blend of chic and adrenaline geek that used to rub elbows and drink cheap beers in the bars?

Hong is 61 years old and has lived in the village of Xuan Dai all his life. During the war he was in his early 20s, but was just a farmer, not a soldier. Nonetheless, as a result of American action, his father and brother were killed as were his wife's parents. In addition the buildings in his village and all the crops were wiped out by bombs, bulldozers and Agent Orange.
When Allen took his hand and apologized for what the Americans had done, Hong said he and others did not blame the US soldiers, as they were young and had been forced to fight by their military leaders. He said he and others understood the American soldiers were just doing their job. Still he wished he and his people had not suffered so much in body and spirit during those years, as it was made future success and happiness harder to come by.

Allen and the servicemen we're traveling with never thought they'd land in Hanoi, much less be welcomed. Nonetheless the capital of communist Vietnam has embraced capitalism and the West, including America with open arms and pocketbooks. The highway that took us from the airport to the city was bordered by billboards and factories for a multitude of multinationals including, Panasonic, Honda, Nokia and Ford and more than one person responded with a thumbs up and "America is number one!" when we told them where we were from.

From the Con Man's mailbag:
Will anyone stop for a minute to think about what we are losing with all this 'shut 'em down quick' progress? Where will the next generation of "locals" hang out? You know, the people you met when you came here 20 years ago, looking for a job that would let you work to live. Or in the words of John Denver, "earn just enough to spend." I certainly hope we don't turn into a trust fund harbor. Despite the finest renovations money can buy (I'm sure), it would eliminate a lot of the beauty that makes up the character of this town.

Today, generally speaking, the right wing is wrong. They are wrong about Iraq, if only because they had to lie about it, suckering the American public into thinking Saddam Hussein is Osama bin Laden or some rough equivalent. This makes all the sense of accusing Louis Farrakhan (Nation of Islam) of being the grand dragon of the KKK -- behind the scenes. By the logic used in right wing circles Bush is a terrorist, since there were Al Queda cells in this country. In fact there is more support for this idea, since there were no actions of terror in the Hussein led Iraq that we claim occured. So what if the idea is ridiculous. Someone voted for the nonsense! Just don't look at me.
