We Do Not Have a Mayoral Candidate

From Michael Conniff's mail bag:
Dear Highway Supporters,
Attached is the campaign material for BEST (Better Efficient Safe Transportation), the group supporting bus lanes. It includes the names of all the mayoral candidates except Bonnie Behrend, who says on her web site: "I am not in favor of 4-laning." I tried to get any candidate, whether mayoral or council, to simply pledge to abide by the wishes of the voters, and did not get a single taker.
These are not good times for democracy, and if I lived in Aspen, I would vote NO on the bus lanes, and leave everything else blank in protest.
It's probably too late to organize a boycott of the mayoral section of the ballot, although it would certainly send a message.
Believe it or not, the closest thing we have to support is a comment by Mick Ireland, a version of which I have found in two different newspaper articles: "Ireland is against another vote [on the preferred alternative], saying 'people don't trust you when you keep asking them the same question.' He believes any change in the voters' current mandate should come from residents themselves." Aspen Times 4/12/07
So, vote for Mick if you can make yourself do it. Otherwise, leave the space blank, and hope enough other people do the same that somebody notices.
Jeffrey
P.S. If anybody can direct me to a worthwhile council candidate or two, let me know.
