Aspen Earthmoving President & CEO, Rick Stevens, knew Smith for over 30 years and worked with him as partners at Aspen Earthmoving for almost 25 years since Smith began it in 1983.
“[I can say] that the family is a little upset by the coverage of the tragedy that has been in the news since this has happened,” said Stevens. “What nobody really sees are all the good things that Chris has done for the community over the years, he loved and cared so much, and many of the things he did without anyone asking him to in the first place.”
Stevens is referring to the countless random acts of kindness that Smith performed including his involvement with the Aspen Ski Club, Aspen Junior Hockey, and the development of employee housing in Aspen.
So let’s start with the obvious proposition that I’m hopeless—high-blood pressure, flabadelic, out of shape, eat much too much of the wrong stuff, right?—that I do everything wrong except drink like a fish, which I don’t.
The only thing I have going for me is the mirror and Sarah Kochlis, my brand-new personal trainer at the Aspen Health Club & Spa.
Aspen Summer Words featured seven of Africa’s finest new scholarly heroes, including Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, along with 19 other award winning and bestselling authors from America.
With the heat of the afternoon sun beating down, listeners took comfort inside the cooled underground night-club where the ‘beat’ coming from literary legends representing their countries and their heritage took the stage as they conducted short readings and storytellings that literally captivated the crowds.
Finally it’s here! After a long awaited arrival Wellness Care and Life Lectures are going on at the Aspen Club & Spa. Health, wellness, wholeness are achieved by eating well, moving well, and thinking well.
The name of Michael Conniff’s radio show: Congames, was never more appropriate than it was today and last week as he promoted Dr. Tawfik Hamid’s version of the roots of jihad. The Conman has been conned.
A new trend has arisen in recent years for Jewish pro-Israel activism groups to recruit so-called Muslim "reformers" such as Tawfik Hamid, who professes to speak as an expert on terrorism and Muslim culture and religion. In fact, Hamid’s only credentials are that he was allegedly recruited by a terrorist organization over twenty years ago. He grew up in a secular family with no formal Islamic training, yet claims to know the heart and soul of Islam. The true extent of his ignorance is revealed when he blatantly states that the majority of moderate Muslims condone jihad and that most American mosques preach the violent overthrow of secular society. He also asserts that democracy and Islam are incompatible. These are despicable characterizations of Islam that Dr. Hamid has no right to make because they are based solely on his own limited experience and are nothing but opinion.
Ask anyone and they will tell you that Aspen is a “dog friendly” town. They’ll say how wonderful it is that our citizen’s embrace the hound, allowing them to do as they please. It is true, Aspen is a place where felines have inalienable rights and are treated with respect (often with more respect than people show one another). I’ve even heard someone say that the dogs here seem “unusually happy.” Call me a jerk, but often times the healthy population of canines in Aspen makes me unusually miserable.
There are just some things you never imagine for yourself. Can you think of what that something is for you?
For me, it was the cycling program at the Aspen Club. I would walk by the ’spinners’ looking strong and then look away wondering what on earth they were killing themselves for. I wouldn’t even allow myself to consider the program, even though I was secretly curious.
