American in Mexico
Allan Wall Coming to Games on Wednesday
English professor Allan Wall is an American who lives and works in Mexico. He prolifically has been writing articles about various aspects of Mexico and Mexican society for the past decade. Allan Wall will be a guest on KNFO's Con Games' Immigration Wednesday, 9AM-10AM, October 31,Haloween--Eeek!
Some provocative excerpts from his many writings:
·
“…[M]ass emigration hurts Mexico, in various ways. The existence of the emigration safety valve removes the incentive for reform from the country’s leadership. Shutting it would put pressure on Mexico’s leaders to reform the economy.”
·
“Thousands of Mexican men use emigration to abandon their wives and children…Our open borders and encouragement of illegal immigration help these Mexican deadbeat dads dump their families. Emigration to the United States has been in many ways absolutely devastating for family life in Mexico.”
“There really are irredentist/revanchist sentiments among Mexicans and Mexican-Americans in the U.S.A., and this is bound to grow and get worse. It will make Canada’s Quebec problem look trivial by comparison.”
“In fact, Mexican politicians have two economic safety valves – oil and emigration. They rely on these to avoid making the difficult decisions. Tax evasion is rampant in Mexico. It’s been estimated that 40% of businesses and 70% of professionals and small business owners cheat on taxes. It’s been estimated that up to 50% of potential tax revenues go uncollected. So the government uses state oil monopoly PEMEX as a de facto tax collection agency. Indeed, the state monopoly provides close to 40% of the Mexican government budget.”
“As I’ve pointed out before. it’s not only poor Mexicans who want to emigrate (in fact, the poorest Mexicans are too poor to emigrate) but many middle-class Mexicans as well. According to a recent online poll of Mexican professionals, 82% expressed interest in moving to the U.S., with 17% of them ready to emigrate illegally…As long as the U.S. allows the mass migration of Mexicans, both legally and illegally, it will continue, to the detriment of both countries.”
