LUCKY ME! I just won the UK Lottery!

December 22nd, 2007 at 12:43am Jim Vail 541

Has this ever happened to you? It has happened to me at least 4 or 5 dozen times in the past few years. And at least a dozen times each for the Spanish Lotto, the Irish Sweepstakes, Australian Lottery and Thai Lottery. All told, I should be worth in excess of $500 million! Yeah, right!

I have pretty much had it up to here (pointing above the top of my head) with all of the various unsolicited e-mails claiming something similar to what I have mentioned above. They usually say something like "Your e-mail address has been drawn from a random drawing...", but guess what? If you look REAL close at the e-mail, alongside of the "TO:", there is a blank space or the "TO:" is missing entirely. Or, the e-mail address listed in the "TO:" area is the same as the sender.

I have some six different e-mail addresses and the above has happened on all of them, but most of the time, these flaky mails show up on my Yahoo account. What's up with that? Anybody who's probably more computer-literate than myself have any solutions? Or just grin and bear it and get REAL good on the "delete" key - which I am already doing.

Oh, I almost forgot - Also add to the above list all of those lawyers or barristers whose client has been killed in a plane crash or an auto accident with no heirs and the government will take millions of dollars if an heir is not found soon - usually the government of Nigeria of all places. PLEASE!

I have an online business and I do advertise all over the net, so I get literally a TON of e-mails daily, most of them totally junk. The above listed examples comprise at least 35 to 40% of all the e-mails I have to handle and I am tired of all the time I spend just going through them all. It would be very nice to get rid of a lot of them!

Lastly, I should also warn all of you out there about another aspect. Awhile ago, I managed to get a lifetime membership on the "My Space Mailer" where I can advertise to literally hundreds and hundreds of thousands of MySpace members. Guess what happens when I send out a new ad to them? Soon after, I get junk mail for things like "Mega Dik", "Wondercum" as well as Viagra and Cialis to the tune of 40 to 80 per day and it takes at least 2 to 3 weeks for the quantity to even start to slacken. I know this because of the particular e-mail address they come to; usually used only for my customers from my business website. All I can say is "Aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrggggggggggg" or something similar.

Merry Christmas and HAPPY NEW YEAR to all of the Roaring Fork and Eagle Valleys!

    Jim,

I would suggest an inexpensive spam filter on your email. You can set them to filter out emails containing specific words. This is why you see words like "Dik", they are trying to get past filters.

Also, while I have a general email for open contact. Once that is made, I respond with a separate email used only for known customers and tell them to please utilize that one for all future contact and business. That way I don't have to filter through junk searching for my customers.

Hope that helps a little. Good luck.
