Finally Someone Said It

First off, before I start this blog I want to let the readers know that I am a former teacher and got my Masters in Education from Columbia University. With that said here is my blog.
During last night's Presidential debate between Senator Barack Obama and Senator John McCain the topic of education came up. Both Obama and McCain pledged to spend more on education and to make sure that every American child receives a good education to compete in this global economy. They both debated about school vouchers, the no child left behind policy, recruiting new teachers and all the usual topics that come with the education debate.
There was only one glaring difference in this debate and it surprised me. Obama actually had the guts to call out parents and ask them to do more to help with their children's education. This is a key issue to fixing our education system. We need parents to get involved in their children's school work and push them.
I had a lot of great teachers in my life, but nothing substituted for my parents threatening to kill me if I did not do my homework and I did not strive to get ahead. You could have the best teacher in the world but without support from home it is difficult to make progress. Most politicians to me seem scared to bring up this topic because they don't want to offend potential voters. Last night Obama took a political risk and a step in the right direction. The more parents care the better off our education system is going to be.
