Sunday started early. The alarm sounded at 5:00 am sharp. I donned my sweats and headed downstairs to heat the teapot, clean off the kitchen counter, and deploy breakfast and lunch preparations. My son agreed to do his buddy’s paper route, so after I’d packed lunch, I rousted him. While he pulled on layers, I toasted him some sourdough bread, poured him a cup of tea, and put the raspberry jam and milk out for him. When he finished breakfast, I helped him wrap and bag papers. He was back in twenty minutes.

I secretly relish watching critics slather egg on their faces by using their pen to eviscerate. That’s what happened to the critics of Daniel Craig in the months leading up to the release of Casino Royal. Mind you, I’m not a Bond fan, and far from a Flemming purist, but the negative press generated by Craig’s appointment to the role caught even my attention—this, ostensibly, by the people who said relatively little about Pierce Brosnan and Timothy Dalton.
I saw Quantum of Solace the other day. Casino Royal was a damn good movie. I haven’t finished framing Quantum. Nevertheless, I have a few thoughts.

Re: “Escaping the past, believing in the future” Melanie Asmar, RMN, 11/29/08
“Clearer path to growth” Osher, DP, 11/27/08
The Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News frequently publish stories on legal and illegal migrants struggling to make a new home in America. Those pieces, filled with sob stories enough to empty a box of Kleenex at a ‘chick flic’, provide the fodder for a never ending flood of immigrants seeking a better life.
But they never talk about the other side of the coin as those immigrants impact American citizens. The DP and RMN never talk about jobs taken from American citizens by legal and illegal immigrants. They fail to talk about the 28 million Americans living on food stamps or 14 million Americans unemployed because immigrants take millions of jobs annually. They fail to tell readers that taxpayers pay for the plane flights, resettlement costs, food, medical, education and housing for immigrants.
I’ve traveled in Nepal and Bhutan. Their cultures feature water buffalo for tractors and no electricity in their rural areas. They walk everywhere along with their donkeys they use for transport of goods. Melanie Asmar, RMN journalist, reported that Som Baral from Bhutan, a teacher, now bags groceries at King Soopers. His wages and taxes cannot come close to paying for the costs of his daughter’s education in our schools. He and his family suffer with culture shock that few of us can understand. Let’s say you found yourself thrust from Denver metro onto a farm in Bhutan. How would you like to drink out of a stream, hoe for food and use an outhouse 100 percent of the time and no more TV or electricity? You would never see another movie. You’d go nuts in a week! Think how they feel changing from a farm, culture, language and family—to Denver!
Worse, we displaced a teacher out of Bhutan that impoverishes that country far more by taking an educated man away from his culture. Thus, both brain drain and leadership skills flit away into America where Baral stands at the bottom of the intellectual and economic rung. America creates a brain drain all
over the world that impoverishes all those countries—leaving them with bankrupted educational systems and economies. In other words, we steal their best and brightest.
Asmar reported Colombian Josefina Castro said, “I like it here, but I want to go back to Columbia.” Her federal aid runs out next year. She’s 80 so she hasn’t worked or given a dime in taxes. That happens to our country by the millions of refugee immigrants—cost us untold billions of dollars.
Whether they come from Somalia, Burma or Ethiopia, they find themselves ripped out of their cultures, languages and family connections. They arrive in the USA without any skills that benefit America. They cost U.S. taxpayers billions of dollars in resettlement costs. They become cab drivers, grocery baggers and other jobs that require no skills other than showing up. At the same time, they take jobs away from American teens, working poor and other Americans—who now stand in unemployment lines, soup kitchens and living on welfare.
In order to save all the suffering people of the world, the U.S. would have to immigrate 18 million people annually that starve to death worldwide. That’s eight million adults and 10 million children that die of starvation or related diseases annually! Can we save all of them? No! How about saving them in their own countries? How about helping them with water purification, farming techniques and family planning?
Beyond the sob stories and the human misery, those reporters never talk about the horrific impact of adding 2.4 million immigrants to the USA annually. Each one causes a 12.6 ‘ecological footprint’ whereby 12.6 acres of land must be destroyed to support that person. The average immigrant causes an immediate 10 times more negative impact to as high as 30 times more impact on our delicate environment. Each immigrant overloads our carrying capacity. Those people represent a growing hyper-population load on the United States that cannot be tolerated as we head into the “Post Oil Era” whereby we cannot support 300 million U.S. citizens and growing toward 400 million in 30 years.
I invite the DP and RMN, and Melanie Asmar along with DP Christopher Ocher to write about what Denver faces when our “unending growth” causes our water to run out, the energy declines and what we face when Colorado adds the projected six million more people—primarily by immigration. In conjunction, we expect to add 100 million to the USA. We’re not talking a tea party here folks!
Ironically, the world grows by 77 million desperately poor and starving each year. We cannot save them by bringing them to our country! We face mega planetary consequences that explode beyond most readers’ comprehension. The more we bring to America, the worse it gets for all of us—faster! If you think I’m fooling, I recommend reading “The Long Emergency” By Kunstler and “Peak Everything” by Heinberg or my forthcoming book “Nation on the Brink: The Next Added 100 Million Americans”.
Everything we face stems from hyper-population loading caused by legal and illegal immigration. Sixty years from now, those journalists’ own kids will write stories about desperate Americans scratching out a living in a country with an added 300 million people. We can no longer afford mass immigration into America if we expect a viable and sustainable civilization.

Colorado motorists are paying an average of $1.81 per gallon, a full $2.28 lower than the year’s peak of $4.09 on July 16 and the lowest prices Colorado has seen since February of 2005. The statistics reported by the American Automobile Association’s (AAA) Weekly Fuel Gauge Report indicated that the average price per gallon of regular unleaded dropped 25 cents in one week.
We’ve been given no satisfactory explanation for this phenomenon. What’s your theory? Here’s your chance to weigh in and tell us what you think is going on.
Quick questionnaire:
1. Why were gas prices so high last summer?
2. Did your driving habits change due to the higher prices?
3. Why are gas prices so low now?
4. Did your driving habits change due to lower prices?
5. Where do you think gas prices are headed?

Black Friday, the beginning of the traditional Christmas shopping season, is the Friday after Thanksgiving and usually brings a boon to retailers and consequently, the national economy. In these difficult economic times, it’s anyone’s guess whether retail sales will suffer, further increasing the effects of the recession. One way to boost our local economy is to do our Christmas shopping right here in the mid-Valley. From Basalt to Carbondale one can find unique gifts to fit any budget.
Looking for books? Basalt’s Town Center Booksellers and Carbondale’s Novel Tea fit the bill and offer other items as well, from posters to pottery.
For electronics, audiovisual devices and motorized toys visit the Gadgit Shop, located in the City Market Plaza in Carbondale. Owner Cory Nielson broke from the national chain Radio Shack last year and opened his own shop to fill local’s electronic needs.
If you’re looking for exotic and unique gift items, try Sherpa Moonbeam Imports in Carbondale’s historic downtown. Nepalese immigrant Sumjee Sherpa McGavock and Dennis Collins joined forces several years ago to feature imported and locally made clothing, accessories, and home décor.
For the kids, check out The Artist’s Collective next to the Post Office in Carbondale where educational and creative toys abound. They also carry wonderful holiday decorations and stocking stuffers.
Harmony Scott Jewelry at the east end of Carbondale’s Main Street offers stunningly beautiful handmade necklaces, earrings, bracelets and more. Just entering the shop provides a visual feast of color and form.
The Kitchenstore in Basalt has everything for your favorite cook in a price range from budget lite to heavy hitter. And don’t forget your furry and feathered friends. RJ Paddywack’s in the El Jebel City Market center has toys, accessories, and treats for your pet.
Having a hard time deciding what to buy? How about a gift certificate to one of the area’s restaurants? Basalt and Carbondale are brimming with a multitude of excellent eateries so there’s a place to please every palate.
With all of the options in the mid-Valley, shopping locally is fun and nearly stress free. Best of all, supporting locally owned businesses means much of the cost of your purchases will go right back into the community. So forget driving to Denver, Grand Junction or even Glenwood Springs to visit the big brand chain stores. Make the economicly sustainable choice and keep it local.

In the Cold War, Mutually Assured Destruction—AKA MAD—was Strangelove come to life.
Kids of my generation spent lifetimes in ridiculous bomb shelters wondering if the lead in a pencil could protect us from imminent destruction. I can still see the can of beans in our basement lined up like a Maginot Line, next to the soup before anyone told us soup is good food. At least we the pipsqueaks and our designated representatives had a plan. The only way we could keep the Soviets from blowing us to smithereens was to make sure we could blow them to smithereens...and to make sure they knew it.

Thanksgiving has always been one of the more interesting holidays in my book. It all started with a "stray dog" thanksgiving one year at college. A few of us stayed at school for the holiday break and were invited to a faculty member's home for the holiday. There we found 20 unrelated people enjoying each others company with a feast of food and cocktails.
That is what sets this holiday apart. Its key ingredients are good food, good drink, and good people. Family is nice, but not necessary. A large part of Aspen is made of transplants that left friends and family "Back East" or elsewhere, and because of this, Aspen has a great tradition of welcoming randoms together to form that "family". So I hope you find yourself at someone's table or find someone at your table. If not there are a few Aspen Restaurants and others that invite you to dine.

"America: the world's most powerful nation, bankrupt and armed to the teeth; flooded with diametrically opposing cultures--turning it into a balkanized third world country. Frightening! " Rolando
Our U.S. Congress signs America’s death warrant by the tens of thousands every month. While one in every six American children lives below the poverty line, Congress imports 200,000 immigrants every month that equal 2.4 million legal and illegal immigrants annually that need housing, medical care and education. While 28 million Americans subsist on food stamps, we host 20 million illegal aliens that displace jobs from those Americans without jobs. With 14 million Americans unemployed, our U.S. Congress outsources, insources and offshores jobs with incredible alacrity.
Now, as if we do not suffer enough problems, the Bush administration flies 1,000 Iraqi refugees into our country every 30 days. Thus far in 2008, 11,000 more Iraqi immigrants live off American tax dollars, with another 17,000 expected in 2009. But these aren’t just ‘usual’ immigrants; these people represent Sunni and Shiite Muslims that have battled each other for hundreds of years. These folks don’t just ‘hate’ each other; they despise and kill one another!
Why not inject ourselves with the Bubonic Plague, import Israel and Palestine immigrants or more Saudi immigrants who flew airliners into the World Trade Centers? Can anyone imagine ‘how’ angry these immigrants must be? Bush bombed them back into the stone age? He killed thousands of their women and children! Can you imagine how many live for revenge? How many of the 12,000 that make our shores this year and the 17,000 arriving next year will be angry, livid and outraged?
Immigrant multitudes pour into California without end. A whopping 1,650 people, mostly immigrants, per day, arrive into that already overpopulated state. One reader wrote, “This proves the people of California have lost their minds. There are 1.5 million Californians out of work and now they are doing this just when we are in a financial crisis. I think they are trying to kill America. How many more people can we absorb? Our government has lost its mind if they allow this. They should be marching in the street in Los Angeles to NOT bring in more people. More people for the taxpayer to pay for does NOT make any sense.”
“Your most recent article TEN REASONS WHY MEXICANS CAPTURED AMERICA, Nov. 13th, 2008 cannot be more plain in telling a chilling reality most Americans seem so passively be accepting of and apparently indifferent to our country’s invasion by Mexico,” said one reader. “Manuel Alderete, of the Mexican Movement is proudly expressing the fact of the matter to America’s future result of a brainwashed, ignorant or lethargic bundled state in a majority of our fellow citizens.
“If the Gallup Poll July, 2008 linked in your article, truly and accurately reflects Americans opinion on immigration, finds that only 39% of Americans favor a reduction on immigration, there is no hope left for America and I rest my case.
“If our fellow-citizens would take the 10 minutes time or less to read your bi-weekly columns and nothing else, by now, they would be well informed about America’s perils and incoming bleak future. And maybe, they would also feel as I do, mad as hell, and join the efforts of others to stop it.
“The result of the poll tells me that our countrymen still do not “Get it”, that our government, our two major political parties and their corrupted whores posing as the representatives of the “people”, along with the fifth column MSM and the ethnocentric special interests groups, are each pursuing interests that will change America into a borderless territory as a non- Nation as part of a global feudal-like community in the Northern-Southern hemisphere.
“Our fellow citizens with the aid of the fifth column MSM have systematically being conditioned or coerced into accepting political correctness tactic effective in the use of words to discourage attempts and to quell any meaningful opposition.
“As an example, being opposed to illegal immigration- -racist! A term skillfully employed which most Americans are quick to deny it and to run away from. La Raza’s and their ilk intimidating tactics have effectively quieted Mr. Lou Dobbs, an outspoken champion of the legal immigration issue and many others in TV land. Radio talk opponents are next and the Internet perhaps not far off.
“I reside in the South West Texas gulf area in the Rio Grande Valley, the entire region along the border and beyond it is Mexican dominated; grocery products, music, radio, TV programming, all government services and offices, politicians, you name it. The displaying of the Mexican flag and signs in the Spanish language and among themselves speaking in Spanish is not uncommon. A large portion of these people, perhaps Mexicans-Americans are capable of speaking English, but if you are not Anglo looking in appearance, you will be most surely, spoken in Spanish. I often hear comments- Anglos should learn to speak Spanish.
“Their displaying of the Mexican flag and speaking in Spanish, it is nothing more than an “in your face” demonstration of their arrogant and contemptuous attitude.
“Mexicans are fiercely pro-Mexican and very resentful of European-Americans. I will venture to guess that there would be nothing more satisfying to Mexicans than to see America on “its knees”. Our fellow citizens not becoming active in the defense of our country, and those living in their pristine communities enclaves in particular, are in for a rude awakening!”
|
Another reader, Brian said, “You ask the question, "Where will Americans flee?" I think the question to ask is where will Mexicans flee? Mexico, according to economist Thomas Sowell, is actually richer in resources than the United States. But Mexican culture has made it a violent, corrupt, impoverished, hellhole. Who can blame Mexicans for fleeing to a better place which has been built by Americans who value education, justice, private property, and the rule of law--all those qualities of our nation which made it free and prosperous?
“Unfortunately, when Mexicans reach this relative paradise, instead of embracing our Constitution and the values which have made this country so much better than Mexico--or any other place I know of--they proceed to make it as much like Mexico as they can. They encourage more Mexicans to come here, driving down their own wages, bankrupting hospitals, and creating crime-ridden slums. Indeed I have read about Mexicans already fleeing Mexicanized areas of the United States for those better areas still largely populated by, and run by, Americans.
“Mexicans apparently believe that wealth is somehow intrinsic to this place--they do not realize that it is the principles and values of Americans which made it wealthy. Mexicans apparently believe that they can just take this wealth away from Americans--and for a time, they can, but the wealth will run out. Already Mexicans have bankrupted California--a study found that if it were not for all those immigrants consuming more in state services than they pay in, California would actually have a budget surplus instead of a huge deficit.
“Now Mexicans have helped elect Obama. Bad as Jorge Bush and his predecessors have been, Obama will only accelerate the decline with his socialist programs. Of course it is in Obama's interest to bring in and give citizenship to as many more third world immigrants as possible to assure his next election victory. The more minority interest groups clamoring for handouts, the more secure future socialist administrations will be. America will become a hellhole to rival Mexico itself.
“Mexicans should be worried about how to preserve America as Americans made it. When the entire country has become Mexicanized, where then will they flee?”
