Hidden Gems got an earful last night in Eagle from opponents to the proposed additions of wilderness sites to the White River National Forest.
Hundreds of snowmobilers in the eagle valley turned out at the public meeting to back to plans to add those areas as protected. Sloan Shoemaker of wilderness workshop in Carbondale was jeered as he tried to make a power point presentation outlining the Gems. After the meeting supporters of the plans expressed doubt that a compromise could ever be reached with those vocal opponents.
A new cell phone tower in woody creek is approved. No one spoke out against the Tower at Wednesday’s meeting of the Pitkin County Commissioners. Residents had complained, and Commissioner Rachael Richards voted against it, but the vote was 3-1 (Jack Hatfield is out of town) to approve the tower aimed to fill in gaps in coverage by Sprint-Nextel.

THE ASPEN CANARY INITIATIVE SUPPORTS QITTLES 60 CITY BUS TOUR
Mobile Marketing Tour to Promote “Live the Dream” Goes Green
Aspen, CO (October 28th, 2009)— The Qittle “Live the Dream” bus tour will promote environmentally sustainable behaviors with the support of the City of Aspen’s Canary Initiative.
The Canary Initiative is donating Canary Tags—investments in local projects that reduce carbon—in order to make the bus carbon neutral. During the five month tour, Qittle will use text marketing strategies to encourage large audiences to “avoid, reduce then offset” their carbon impacts.
Kim Peterson, director of the Canary Initiative sees it as a great opportunity and a perfect match for what the Canary Initiative is attempting to accomplish.
“We will be able to help other cities establish their own carbon reduction programs through this effort,” Peterson said. “This type of marketing is cutting edge and targeted toward an ever growing tech savvy market.”
With support such as the Canary Initiative, Qittle will hold educational seminars throughout the U.S. helping businesses use new media tools like mobile marketing to relay their message. The bus tour will also promote Qittle’s “Live the Dream” campaign where one person will win a free year in Aspen, complete with a place to live, ski pass and the essentials to survive in the mountain town.
The Canary Initiative was created by the City of Aspen to serve as an action plan that identifies steps to reduce global warming pollution; inform the public about impacts from, and solutions for global warming; and to advocate for action on a regional, state, and national level.
Qittle helps businesses create, customize and manage a mobile marketing initiative. Launched on the dawn of a worldwide mobile reign, Qittle brings the message to the customer through the mobile phone-a device most customers don't leave home without. www.qittle.com

Snow showers will increase today. Roads in the area are wet---with new snow falling in Aspen but only a dusting so far. The outlook still is that as much as one foot of snow will fall through the central mountain passes by tomorrow morning----the time for winter driving is here.
Pitkin County Commissioner Michael Owsley challenged this week, costs for helping to finance the ninth judicial district.
D.A. Martin Beeson told the BOCC on Tuesday that together: Garfield, Pitkin County and Rio Blanco County---will have to contribute more than three million dollars to handle the case loads for next year ( most of those are in Garfield County).
But Owsley said the breakdown of just over ten percent for Rio Blanco County versus the 18 percent for Pitkin County was unbalanced…because Rio Blanco County had more filings.
Beeson explained the system is based on population-----Rio Blanco with about half as many county residents as Pitkin.
Four jobs including one police officer’s position have been cut from the Town of Carbondale’s budget: planners in the community are determined to be conservative spenders in the wake of a 25 percent decrease in sales tax revenue for 2009.

Lots of restrictions on when you can go---but at these prices---how about a trip by air?
Dallas based Southwest Airlines is charging flyers only a bit more than what it costs to check a bag at some airlines---for trips under one thousand miles.
One way fares for travel up to 375 miles: $25 $50 to 549 miles, and just $75 for a one way flight up to 999 miles. More than one thousand miles? $100 one way. Travel between December 2nd and 16----or between January 5th and February 10th.
We’ll be checking with local airline expert Bill Tomcich of Stay Aspen Snowmass.com to see how he sees this move by southwest----and what competitors might do to increase their business.

ASPEN, COLORADO (Post Time News)—Aspen Mayoral candidate Marilyn Marks, who came in second in the controversial instant runoff election in May 2009, has been working since then to literally void the election won by Mayor Mick Ireland—and not merely to ensure the integrity of “future elections” as the self-proclaimed citizen activist proclaims.
The revelations come as a result of documents presented by former City Councilor Jack Johnson to Aspen City Council for further action Tuesday night.
The vehicle for Marks’s moves behind the scene has been two members of the Election Commission (EC): attorney Chris Bryan and former Pentagon spokesperson Elizabeth Milias, a close political ally of Marks’s since her move to Aspen. In a series of electronic mail messages obtained by Johnson, her political foe, under the Colorado Open Records Act (CORA), Marks’s fingerprints are visible all over the machinations behind the scenes that all but excluded EC chair Kathryn Koch, the Aspen City Clerk.

Independence Pass is closing today. Maybe not for the entire season, according to the Colorado department of Transportation, but it all depends on how much snow is received. This does appear however to be perfect conditions for a perfect storm---bring a foot or more of new snow to mountain passes----
Independence Pass closes at 3 p.m. today in advance of this predicted winter storm.
5A no more---a mistake on the questions—(some ballots were received with the marketing measure; others without) caused city council in Aspen to nix the question on the November ballot—(the election is next Tuesday)
5A was hoped by the Aspen Chamber to generate hundreds of thousands of additional marketing dollars for summer 2010.
Halloween and how to be safe featured this week on local news. The fact that the holiday falls on a Saturday could mean a greater chance for DUI’s.
Costumes among adults are often the most amusing---and sure to be a winner this year will be those dressing up as Falcon Heene or his wayward Dad ---after the hoax that made world news headlines.
There’s a new web game out now----Balloon Boy Game---which allows you to control the flight path of a cyber Falcon Heene …Balloon Boy Game online---is free.

POST TIME NEWS--Former City Councilor Jack Johnson made significant trouble for citizen activist Marilyn Marks and her crony Elizabeth Milias Monday night by delivering 79 pages worth of documents detailing--ironically--irregularities and even illegal tactics in Marks's pursuit of justice or at least clarity when it comes to Aspen's mayoral election.
Johnson is charging Marks with being "the de facto chairman" of the Aspen election commission of which Milias is a member.
