A shrine in memory of Kiera Tongish has materialized at the site where the 22-year-old local made her final turns last week.
According to David Wood, author of “Sanctuaries in the Snow: The Shrines and Memorials of Aspen/Snowmass,” a shrine was erected in her memory on Dec. 6, on the Grey Wolf run in the Elk Camp section of the mountain. The memorial consists of a cross made of tree limbs, some of her clothing, shoes and additional items.
“I didn’t have anything to do with the shrine. I did not know her,” said Wood. “I just happened to see it [Monday] while skiing.” In an update of his popular book, which is sold at Sundance Gifts, the Village Market and other locales, Wood plans to add a page in Tongish’s memory.
