"Within a span of 15 years, the industry has gone from 'location, location, location' to 'incentive, incentive, incentive.'"

Blogger David Frey reports on Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper's visit to the Western Slope in his pursuit of the governor's mansion.

"Con Games with Michael Conniff" on YourRadio plays host to former Congressman Tom Tancredo, now running for gubernator of Colorado as a third-party candidate. Also: the gayness of the Republican Party and the folly of civil rights activist Glenn Beck.

The Republican pretenders to the political throne in Colorado remind both wag and wonk of Abbott and Costello, one of the greatest tag teams in American comedic history.
Unfortunately for nominees Ken Buck for Governor and Dick Maes for Senator, politics as per usual is no joke in the Rockies, though the pair has long been an embarrassment to regular old Republicans. I know this from Right here in Pitkin County because Righty party types have been bemoaning B&M from the moment it looked as though they might squeegee the Tea leaves hard enough to win their party’s nominations. The word “crazy” has been summoned up by local Republicans more than once—albeit before Buck and Maes won their amazin’ primary victories.

ASPEN, COLORADO—Paywall love is a beautiful thing in the media business—the belief of working journalists that if they charge for content the good old days that never were will grow back like ivy at Wrigley Field.
Jon Miller, chief digital bottlewasher at News Corp., is a true believer in paywalls because his company stands behind the best and the brightest at the Wall Street Journal. Miller made clear at the Forbes Brainstorm conference here that paywalls are next to godliness for News Corp., if only because the Journal stands alone.

I’ve seen some lousy reporting at the Aspen Daily News—including the one this year about a drunken editor trying to bribe a cop—but some of the worst ever can be found in Brent Gardner-Smith’s coverage of the resignation of Hugh Zuker, a candidate for Pitkin County Sheriff.

I’m from New York City, and nobody “hikes” in New York City. They might take a walk crosstown, or skip the subway here and there, or wander along the West Side Highway by the Hudson.
But nobody hikes in New York City, not really, so for a city boy like yours truly to be hiking at all at Beaver Creek Resort made me a bit of a novelty item. Not that the wife, from Ohio, would be faring much better. She had to be coaxed out of her Crocs and into hiking boots and the Leki polls practically had to be thrust wholesale into her hands before she would budge.

Want to commit a crime on your summer vacation? Consider the advantages of sumptuous Aspen, Colorado, where the local City constables are likely to either be lenient or lose the evidence entirely.
Among the missing evidence at the Aspen Police Department (APD), according to a story in the Aspen Daily News, was “a sword used in a 2004 assault, two miniskirts, lidocaine and syringes, a ‘victim’s white panties’ from a 2009 case, a glass dove seized in 2003, and a sports drink stolen from City Market.”
I’m not sure which is more upsetting—the sword or the sports drink.

You can’t tell the players without a scorecard at The Aspen Music Festival and School, but the scorecard just got smaller.
The Music Fest’s board chair Rob LeBuhn got the heave-ho this week when a majority of the board said he had to go. His walk down the gangplank follows the unforced departure of longtime Music Director David Zinman.
The winner and still champeen on the Castle Creek Campus is CEO Alan Fletcher, a composer who took the brunt of criticism for layoffs and cutbacks actually mandated by LeBuhn and the board.

The Aspen Music Festival and School announced today that Rob LeBuhn will step down as board chair, effective immediately. This action is the result of a majority vote taken during a 3-hour-long special meeting of the board held today. In the immediate term, AMFS board vice-chair Mike Murray will serve as chair until the full 48-member board can convene to elect a new chair. The next regularly scheduled board meeting is June 29. The festival season begins July 1.
In the same meeting, the board voted to offer president and CEO Alan Fletcher a 2-year contract renewal, through September 2012. Fletcher has indicated he will accept the offer.

As truly horrendous and reprehensible ideas go, the one that would put Charlie Sheen to work as a part-time expert on the craft of acting at Theatre Aspen will be hard to top, even in a town know for all-hours retching and wretched excess.
