Planning a trip to Israel? Learn about the ancient Hebrew language in this class taught by a rabbi and a minister (though even atheists should find the subject matter interesting.)
A new era of alternative energy is dawning, so to help you learn how to save money on your energy needs and help save the planet too, Altech Solar is holding a free seminar at the Eagle County Building in El Jebel.
As featured on CON GAMES, the guys from Altech will explain how their innovative Evacuated Solar Tube technology can save up to 80% on your gas or electric bills and pay for itself in just six to eight years.
The Con Man discusses his impressions from the Aspen Environment Forum put on by the Aspen Institute and National Geographic magazine, but the best audience in talk radio does not always agree with him.
It is amazing how one group of college students can enter one’s heart so quickly and easily. That is what they did for everyone with whom they performed yesterday. We started at Aspen Elementary School for an all-school assembly. After lunch, the choir worked with the Aspen High School choir who recently performed at Carnegie Hall in February. I felt very emotional as the two choirs blended, side by side to work on a new piece. The same was true working with the Glenwood Springs Varsity choir. Sitting between the two choirs, I was overwhelmed by a wall of beautiful voices singing together.
Since these are college students I though it would be interesting to hear some of their thoughts....
Blogger Deborah Barnekow, director of education outreach for the Aspen Music Festival and School, is traveling to area schools with the Janus Trio this week. This is her first entry....
There’s no need to speculate on just how continued mass immigration will shape Colorado’s and America’s future; we only need look to the immigration laboratory, California, to get the answers.
In 1970, California had a population of about 20 million. It is now a huge 38 million, larger than most countries of the world’s, and it will be a gargantuan 62 million by 2050—if the U. S. government insists on forcing mass immigration onto an already overpopulated America. Virtually 100 percent of California’s explosive growth is a result of immigration, legal and illegal.
I read the below posted article today and have to wonder, what happened to common sense in our education system. For that matter, what happened to common sense in just about anything having to do with security?
Once again, adults who do not use common sense have turned a normal ten year old girl into a criminal. Nice going. Just what we want our educational systems to be doing...producing more criminals by their lack of vision and common sense.
The Aspen Music Festival and School today announced to the public a $25 million gift from Kay and Matthew Bucksbaum, the largest gift in the town's history. The funds will support the programs and facilities of this premier music center, providing the bedrock funding for the building of a new campus that will be named the Matthew and Carolyn Bucksbaum Campus in their honor.
Day 2 from the road with Aspen Music Festival and School Education Outreach Director Debby Barnekow and young composer Andrew Norman.
Today was spent in one of our adopted schools in the PLUS program, Glenwood Springs Elementary. The fifth graders will begin a composition right after Christmas using their recorder instruments, so the goal was to help them find a process to begin. Using his verb piece with video that he presented yesterday to the high school students, Andrew had them improvise sounds that corresponded to the 13 verbs: "... drip, blip, sparkle, glint, float, ... chop, pop, splash." We split the group into two groups and with Andrew and me conducting, creating a sound piece. Of course, then when they heard/saw the piece that Andrew composed, the whole process was very clear... and fun!
Day 1
What a great first day! Anticipation segued into excitement-Andrew is a real charmer, tuned into what appeals to young people. Much of his music is generated from a visual source: architecture, paintings and film.
As the Composer Forum begins once again, I find the same excitement that began the very first one six years ago. Then, there was the question of, would any of the plans work? Would there be children who actually would compose some music based on their interaction with Derek Bermel, the guest composer? And would anyone come hear their pieces? We received a resounding "yes" to these questions and here we are again, bringing another composer, Andrew Norman, into the schools, to work with a variety of select students. Some of these students have participated before and I am excited to see their growth in the new pieces.
What really shocks me more about this weather is the way people dress. Yes, you finally get to see jackets and scarves in Austin after a long awaited hot summer, but more surprisingly, the lack thereof! How is it possible that I see idiot after idiot—I mean student after student wearing shorts??! Sometimes accompanied by nothing more than a t-shirt! How does this happen? And why am I freezing my (a$$) off while these people seem not to have noticed that it is 50 degrees?!
It also makes me wonder why I’m always the cold one. I never cease to get ridiculed for my low tolerance of cold temperatures (in Texas, this usually comes in the form of overzealous A/C units. Those bastards! And yes, I’m referring to air conditioning units themselves). And while I’m on the topic, what is wrong with the world? Why do we need to waste all this energy on making sure that the fat guy in the front row doesn’t feel a drop of sweat underneath the folds in his man boobs? OK, maybe that’s taking it a little far, but do we really need it to feel like a refrigerator everywhere we go? I mean, I think the novelty of “Come on in, its cool inside!” should be long gone by now, and we can come to an understanding on the temperature! But, again, I would be wrong. And just in case you’re wondering, I have no problem complaining about indoor temperatures, because they are controlled by man. I can’t control the weather, but A/C, now that’s someone’s choice.
