Knockoff

What happens at the headwaters is nothing if not amusing, especially when what happens deals in Aspen real estate.

Get A Room

In comment #1, Post blogger flower77 has deep doubts about the fate of Snowmass hotels by any other name--like Viceroy or Westin. "Amazing," she blogs, "the Town Council actually believes Pat Smith will bring in a Westin Hotel to allievate bringing in a larger Viceroy Hotel. My question is why wasn’t the Westin good enough to go into the Base Village area as first planned . And who has even heard of a Viceroy Hotel? Where in the Snowmass Village Mall area is there even enough room to put in another hotel??"

Let's Get Personal

The truth, according to Aspen Life blogger Tom Pazdernik, is just about everyone can get something out of having a personal trainer. "As trainers," he blogs, "we have all been there. We know how it feels to be burned-out, discouraged, or pre-occupied when life gets in the way. Many times a little empathetic story told to a client will go a long way in getting them back on track. There is no one-size-fits-all way to ensure results in fitness. However, an educated trainer who devotes him or herself 100% to their clients success will manipulate their program to ensure their clients are set up to succeed."

Another Aspen Life Invented: Patrick Imeson

Now the truth can be told about Patrick Imeson--or can it?

The truth finally came out about Imeson, but word on the street in Aspen for months and months was that he had managed to invent himself as a private equity investor so effectively that he had convinced John Calamos, he of the Forbes 400, to invest tens of millions of dollars in a raft of questionable companies, including AEX Jet, now grounded in bankruptcy.

Imeson told Calamos, among many other things, that he was a U.S. Naval Academy graduate. He was not. He said he was an F-14 fighter pilot. He was not.

Patrick Imeson was nothing more than a con man, a guy who came to Aspen as a ski bum and schmoozed his way into managing a fund of more than $100 million.

Goa 2: CyberCafes And Other Indian Miracles

From the street, the building with the large "Cyber Cafe" sign looked promising. Then we entered the 10x10 foot first floor open-air office and saw the steepest, smallest circular staircase we've ever seen as the only way up to the second floor. We ascended to find a 10x10 foot room with no glass in the windows that held six computers, two of which were working. The sign said broadband, but it's clearly dial-up. When we sat down there was one other customer - an Indian who was on a nasty porn site- I told Allen in a loud voice to "watch out for that guy - he's looking at PORN." The man quickly switched to other sites, then left.

Passage To India: On The Go To Goa

The highlight of the day was a stop at Gandhi's Smitri -place of martyrdom. There's an exhaustive museum of his life and last days. One interesting exhibit had a list of books he had read - Shakespeare, Tolstoy, and Henry David Thoreau's "On Civil Disobedience."

Aspen Post Batting A Thousand

Life in the blogosphere is not without its milestones. Here at Aspen Post, after little more than a year alive and online we passed a miraculous milestone in August 2007 when we crossed the threshold of 1,000 posts up and available, along with over 2,300 comments therein.

You could look it up, but in the annals of local blogging attention must be paid to this kind of output--with frequent passion, precision, and playfulness as the by-products. Keep in mind that when we threw the switch at Post Time Media Inc. we had no idea whether anyone would blog, or whether anyone would care. With 50 bloggers in the books, now we know they will and they do, and thereby hangs a tail.

Why Basalt Is Better Than Aspen

BASALT, COLORADO--It didn't take the parade at Basalt River Days Saturday for me to finally come to the conclusion that Basalt is flat-out better than Aspen. Nor was it the infamous piece in The New York Times about our little town, nor any of the local coverage (including my own) about Willits and/or the nature of the ongoing boom.

I had come to my conclusion months ago, around about the time that I had lost my stomach for what was going down in Aspen. Every time I would glean the fear of the future and the bile for visitors and second-homers, I would remember my promise never ever to live in a resort town again.

Yoga for Men

It is only recently that the practice of Yoga has become widely accepted as a form of exercise in today’s mainstream population. More and more Yoga studios have popped up and gyms and spas have added regular classes to their schedules. This is good news! As I’ve mentioned countless times, the benefits of Yoga are many. Reducing stress, meditating, stretching and cleansing-all these things are important. Another huge plus with adding Yoga to your routine is increased flexibility and range of motion-here is where you guys come in.

Africa Takes The Stage

Aspen Summer Words featured seven of Africa’s finest new scholarly heroes, including Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, along with 19 other award winning and bestselling authors from America.

With the heat of the afternoon sun beating down, listeners took comfort inside the cooled underground night-club where the ‘beat’ coming from literary legends representing their countries and their heritage took the stage as they conducted short readings and storytellings that literally captivated the crowds.

SUMMERTIME AND THE MARKETING'S EASY

Aspen's Culinary Critic Goes To The Market Looking For Love

And Ends Up With Lettuce

While the hungry hoards mobbed the infamous Tent and attended the smorgasbord of seminars at this Weekend’s Food and Wine Festival, I opted out Saturday, preferring a long leisurely stroll through one of Aspen’s premier culinary venues, the Saturday Farmer’s Market. This was the first of the season – and what a way to welcome summer. National supermarket chains, superstores and uber-grocers have ripped us away from the land with cold cavernous constructs that have no sense of season, place, or time. While they may very well offer advantages of convenience and pricing power, the true market elements they lack are essentially priceless: community, connectivity, and cultural context. They are way-stations in which one loads up and leaves.

That is not the origin purpose of a market.

The local outdoor market serves up a sweetly sublime mix of dazzling visuals, vibrant people, gorgeous produce, and artisanal works. It is a place to linger and mingle, gossip and chat. Going to The Market is a timeless tradition practiced, perfected, nurtured, and revered in Europe. For far too long going to the market in America has meant metal carts, packaged foods, and bar code scanners.
