Ever wonder who maintains the area's hiking trails that we all enjoy? Often times, it's volunteers. Join the Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers today repair portions of the Hunter Creek Trail.

Post blogger and author of “Negligent Scoopers, Beware!” Keith Hemstreet is not the type of guy you’d find cuddled up on the couch with man's best friend. His latest blog reinforces his distaste of Aspen’s dog set. “I read in Friday’s Aspen Times that off-leash dogs may soon be allowed to run free on Smuggler Road,” writes Hemstreet. “Judging by all of the un-leashed dogs you see scampering up and down this popular hiking trail each day, you’d have thought this was already law. I wish I’d known that dogs were required to be leashed. I would have strapped a billy club to my belt and made hundreds of citizen arrests by now.”

The mission of the 5Point Film Festival, going on this weekend in Carbondale, is to inspire adventure for all kinds.

It’s all action-focused, forcefulness. I’ve changed a lot since then. There are so many different ways to go about being fulfilled. I grew up in a home with very competitive athletes. My sister is a professional windsurfer, my brother is on the U.S. Sailing team, an Olympic athlete. I didn’t perform at that level. So that’s all I knew. How to go about it all the way.

This week, the Daily News reported that the City of Aspen is requesting locals go to aspenpitkin.com and complete a questionnaire. According to the article, the questionnaire asks people to list their three favorite places to congregate, as well as their three favorite places to be alone and reflect.
My first thought was that I didn’t want the city to know my favorite places. If they knew, they might do something stupid and ruin them.
So, instead I’ve opted to present the city with the three places that I don’t like to congregate, and the three places that I definitely don’t like to go when I want to be alone and reflect.

We had entered the “practice” portion of the “Women’s Health Conference: From Theory To Practice”—and that meant a group of us was walking in the woods to the Rio Grande Trail and thence into Clark’s Market in Aspen with Dr. Bob Vogel, the University of Maryland professor of medicine who doubles as chief of medicine for the Pritikin Longevity Center and Pritikin Research Foundation.
The idea of the conference, sponsored by the forward-thinking Aspen Center for Integral Health (acih.org) was to dig down deep into what goes down in the real world. Thus: the walk, a moveable lecture about what remains for us to feast upon in the healthiest of worlds.

“Harumph! Harumph!” a BIG sound from a BIG animal sounded not far from the tent.
I awoke with a rush of adrenaline that raced through my body like the cars at the Indy 500. Fear plowed through my mind like Hurricane Katrina. Whatever it was, it was BIG! I hadn’t had that kind of fear since I faced a grizzly in Alaska in the 70s.

Have you ever had the urge to give up all your material possessions, quit your job, and travel to the other side of the country to live in the mountains? That's exactly what I did. With only a suitcase, a train ticket, and $300 in my pocket, I pulled up stakes and plunked down in the middle of the Roaring Fork Valley in the Colorado Rockies. The Sopris District includes parts of the Collegiate Peaks wilderness area which contains more fourteeners than any other wilderness area in the lower contiguous 48 states.

Lots of people talk of about how great it would be to make a living doing what they love, but how many actually have the courage to do it? The simple answer; very few. Instead, we choose careers that we feel will offer the greatest financial payoff. Careers that will provide stability and long-term employment.
There are many risks involved in pursuing one’s passion. The risk of failure. Risk of financial ruin. The risk of having to accept defeat and give up a dream in which you’ve invested heavily. It takes a person of exceptionally strong will to make a go of it and the truth is, most of us don’t have what it takes.

Sporting cowboy boots and hat, fifth generation Coloradoan Senator Ken Salazar — originally from the San Luis Valley—appeared fashionably late at the Roaring Fork Transit Authority (RAFTA) hybrid bus dedication ceremony at the Red Brick School on Tuesday July 3rd and greeted the small crowd of city officials, advocates, and press by saying “welcome to my town.”
The ceremony in celebration of the four new diesel hybrid-electric transit busses that RAFTA just put on the tracks, was apart of a 2006 grant made possible by the Alternative Transportation in the Parks and Public Lands program. The busses will hopefully help congestion caused by visitors and vehicles in the Maroon Bells and Snowmass Wilderness Area of the White River National Forest.

Deep Water Running is usually thought of as a form of rehabilitation following an injury or surgery. However, it also has great benefits for the fit athlete for use as cross training or as a way to improve speed and strength without impact on the muscles used in a primary sport. An example of this can be found when coaches of long distance runners get their athletes in the pool for various workouts on a day prior to a long even paced run. The athlete can work on speed while doing a “deep water interval session” which will be beneficial not only to increase speed but also rid the legs of lactic acid and allow for fresher legs/muscles for the workout the next day.
