With a climb of 4,000 vertical feet, The Ride for the Pass draws some of the areas best athletes. Those lacking legs of steel need not apply.

“Through the years,” writes Post blogger Frosty Woolridge, “I've picked up pedal partners during my travels around the world. They've pedaled through 50 states with me for a glimpse of one of the wealthiest societies on the planet. Sometimes, they discover different aspects to the United States of America than what they expected.” So begins the incredible story of Stan, a man who sold his computer company and gave up his family and the “plastic world” to bike through North and South America with his new best friend, a cat he calls Little Chum. "Our group rolled further into the desert as John and I probed Stan for more of his background. Thirteen years on the road from Alaska, the Yukon Territory, through the USA, Mexico, Central America and to the bottom of South America. Never the same road twice! With that many years on the road, he possessed the stuff of legends."

You can talk all you want about ski country, but until you see this video featuring winter in Aspen--and the four beautiful seasons here in the Roaring Fork Valley--the rest sounds just like talking the talk without walking the walk.

Edward Abbey’s novel Desert Solitaire opens with a simple, yet intriguing line. “This is the most beautiful place on earth,” he writes, a short and powerful sentence that grabs your attention and leaves you wondering where this place might be.
The most beautiful place on earth that Abbey writes of is southeastern Utah, a topographical gem of red rock canyons, snow capped peaks and the home of Arches and Canyonlands National Parks.

We are now indeed in the middle of what can best be described as 'monsoon season'. The days start out innocuous enough with a beautiful cloud free sunrise quickly warming with the bright summer sun. However, as the temps climb, so do the clouds. With the warming of the mountain valleys, that air quickly climbs and collides with the cooler upper air creating a recipe that turns out lightning storms and rain showers every afternoon from now until late August. Don't fret over the weather, it just means you have to rearrange your schedule for outdoor activities.

I'm currently sitting on my porch at the Bald Bobby secret lair at the Aspen Highlands on this beautiful Tuesday afternoon getting a can of whoop ass handed to me by my new Photoshop program. Since I'm getting nowhere with that, I've decided to have a sit and hammer out another episode of the Big Bald Blog. Although I have many, one of my favorite hobbies here in the Roaring Fork Valley is road biking.

As I sit here contemplating my first foray into the literary underworld known as 'blogging', I am curious as to know if there is a blogging equivalent of the Pulitzer. The point is moot because I'm no nearer that award as I am to winning the next Tour. In this little literary opine, you will neither find any quips about local politics, drug raids nor rants about the four lane into Aspen. The whole purpose of this poopsheet is to inform you of neat things to do in the upper valley, local roads on which to take bike rides, great hiking trails, activities to do on the cheap and the such. Do stay tuned as you will be titillated, informed and maybe I'll even throw in a literary haha every now and then. And with that, I'm out!
