The Food & Wine Classic has begun in Aspen and this year the libations are flowing with gusto while the food has left me hungry. Last night I attended the Wines from Spain soiree held at a private home where I chatted with chef Jose Andres. He was funny and truly engaging. The main dish at the soiree was “Paella” a Spanish version of jambalaya. His crew struggled with the altitude to find a boiling point to make the Paella and it showed in the dish … that being said the chef on the grill kept the party hopping with his chorizo sausage sandwich best described as a “Braut with a tasty bite”. I can’t wait to make those at home!
I had the good fortune to go to Social, the new Aspen restaurant on East Hopkins Avenue, on opening night, but I finally had the chance to return this week with a group of four friends of ours from Michigan. At first, I was concerned we had led our visiting Spartans astray. Social, you see, is based on the Spanish Tapas concept, whereby small dishes are the norm--and these guys like to live LARGE when they're living in Aspen. One time, at Takah Sushi, our visiting host from Michigan ordered a whole fish so big I was looking for the boat. When these guys saw Social had only a couple of big dishes, they started to mumble even as our stomachs were grumbling. I should have known better....

I hesitated to go see Across the Universe until Laura Thielen from The Aspen Film Fest suggested I go. On her advice I took a chance to spend a Thursday evening at the movies. It was a splendid journey in an era I didn't experience with an uplifting story line. And now I am recommending it to you. Go see this movie.
When the calender strikes October, one thing comes to the forefront at Aspen Spin. That one thing ----- SKI CONDITIONING. Our entire staff is hitting it hard at the super-posh Aspen Club and Spa. Since the weather is still awesome we're continuing to hike and bike like bi-atchs. But, as of today it's www.AspenClub.com each and every day.
With the help of a wellness counselor at The Aspen Club we designed a daily fitness and nutrition routine that should allow all of us at Aspen Spin to have a healthier, more productive ski season. So here it is. Cardio--45 minutes. Core and strength exercises using the bosu ball, medicine ball and fitness ball and some light weights. What can we say--we like to ball. We're concentrating on balance and core specific exercises for skiing ---some of the same ones that Bode Miller does. The whole thing is followed by some serious stretching.
Recent years have seen a boom in Reality TV shows, the concept being these television shows reflect real-life challenges and events going on in our lives “right now”, or to speak. Some of the shows are about dating (aka The Bachelor), some are about survival of the fittest (Survivor) some are about talent (American Idol)…and usually all include some kind of cash purse or prize to be won. Lately I’ve noticed a host of these relaity shows relating to weight loss and/or appearance. “The Swan” comes to mind, where women drastically changed their appearances over the course of 6 months with the help of a trainer, surgeon, dentist and make-up artist. Not to mention an emotional coach as well. (Read: a Shrink) Then there was the “Biggest Loser” and “Fat March.” While the Swan basically sent a message that you are not ok with how you look, these two shows motivate the candiadates to do something good for themselves, lose weight and become healthier in the process. While there is always a bit of ridicule in these shows, for example putting a 350 lb man on the scale for all the world to see, basically these shows were supportive and focused on each person’s goals and personality. Winning money was still a factor, as was teamwork and a smidge of cattiness, but in the end, the contestants ALL came out ahead, having lost pounds and inches and gaining new friendships, perspectives on life, and healthier eating habits. While I am usually not a fan of these reality shows, I found these two to be helpful and motivatinal to anyone trying to lose weight, or make a change in some way in their overall health.
