Thanks From Texas

In comment #1, Dr. Terrie Modesto responds to Rochelle with gratitude for her Hurricane relief work. He writes, “The simplest of things like playing with the children and listening to the life stories and fears of shelter residents is so important in their disaster recovery process.”

Back To School With Brad Richter

Classical guitarist Brad Richter is back in the Roaring Fork Valley's schools, thanks to the Aspen Music Festival and School, with Led Zeppelin on the program. "At Basalt High School," blogs the Music Fest's Debbie Barnekow, "there are 3 guitar classes, part of an every other day schedule like band, choir, math, biology, etc. Principal James Waddick believes this is a necessary avenue of expression for some of his students and indeed it is-a beginner, intermediate and advanced classes. Brad met with all 3 classes today to work on getting some of them ready for performance on Friday's Music and M.O.R.E concert. For nearly all of them of the students, this will be their first time to perform and there were many who are a little uncommitted. Brad's answer is to keep practicing the Led Zepplin song, Kashmir that they are to play."

Agent Orange And The Aspen Institute

HANOI, Vietnam, Feb. 1 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Thirty-three years after the end of the Vietnam War, a series of new measures to address the spread and impact of toxic dioxin used in the war are beginning to yield results, according to a high-level working group of Vietnamese and American leaders working to address the legacy of Agent Orange in Vietnam.

The US-Vietnam Dialogue Group on Agent Orange/Dioxin today said that the first round of dioxin containment measures are now in place in and around the Danang airport, one of Vietnam's largest hot spots of dioxin contamination. After a week of visits across the country, the joint high-level group announced progress on this and a number of other priority issues, including the expansion of services to people with disabilities and key steps toward establishing a high-resolution dioxin testing lab.

CON GAMES: Raucus Caucus In El Jebel

Democracy at work—and democracy without the smirk—were both there to behold election night at the Eagle County Precinct 7 caucus of which yours truly chose to exercise the rites and rights of citizenship.

When we arrived there was a long line leading up to the sign-up table where we Eagle County orphans, cut off from our brethren by the small matter of mountains, nonetheless lined up in reasonable order on a cold night to dictate the course of democracy, at least in our small corner of Colorado. The Republicans, the lost souls of our republic, got there first, and I couldn’t help but peak in to see how the recalcitrant elephants were doing at the El Jebel Community Center where their confab was already under way.

It wasn’t pretty, my friends, as John McCain would say. While hundreds of us Democrats hob-nobbed in the hallways and byways in El Jebel, there were 22 lonely Republicans in all—I counted every single one the way I learned as a cub reporter—in clusters small enough to break your heart without making you think about switching parties.

Bill For Z-G Complex Could Reach $60 Million

ASPEN, COLORADO (Post Time News)—There’s no debate over the need for more office space for both Pitkin County and City of Aspen employees.

But if such a building were to be built downtown on the Zupancis-Galena (Z-G) property owned by the City, taxpayers can expect to endure years of Main Street construction, more traffic at the entrance to Aspen, and a bill for the new building approaching “$50 million to $60 million”—a cost at least $13 million more than building an equivalent structure on land owned by Pitkin County at the Aspen Airport Business Center (ABC).

Have Composition, Will Travel

Day 2 from the road with Aspen Music Festival and School Education Outreach Director Debby Barnekow and young composer Andrew Norman.
Today was spent in one of our adopted schools in the PLUS program, Glenwood Springs Elementary. The fifth graders will begin a composition right after Christmas using their recorder instruments, so the goal was to help them find a process to begin. Using his verb piece with video that he presented yesterday to the high school students, Andrew had them improvise sounds that corresponded to the 13 verbs: "... drip, blip, sparkle, glint, float, ... chop, pop, splash." We split the group into two groups and with Andrew and me conducting, creating a sound piece. Of course, then when they heard/saw the piece that Andrew composed, the whole process was very clear... and fun!

Composer Visits Valley Schools

Before Day 1
As the Composer Forum begins once again, I find the same excitement that began the very first one six years ago. Then, there was the question of, would any of the plans work? Would there be children who actually would compose some music based on their interaction with Derek Bermel, the guest composer? And would anyone come hear their pieces? We received a resounding "yes" to these questions and here we are again, bringing another composer, Andrew Norman, into the schools, to work with a variety of select students. Some of these students have participated before and I am excited to see their growth in the new pieces.
