Poetry Night at Zele Cafe has been popular with locals since its inception in the fall of 2006. Not only do the readings often draw a packed house, but they also expose the talents of many budding poets residing in the valley. Based on the events success, two local woman decided to give the community a forum specifically designed for poets looking to share their work with a greater audience. "Aspen Poets' Society was born of the desire to provide an electronic site for poets to share their original works with lovers of the written word – fellow poets and non-poets alike," writes the groups founders, Lisa Max Zimet and Kim Nuzzo. "A place where one can go any time of day or night, seven days a week, 24 hours a day. A place that knows no geographic boundaries." Click here for your morning dose of prose.

In view of Michael Conniff's correct observation that "'God' is not mentioned in any of Shakespeare's works," Post blogger Mitch Mulhall writes in comment #46, "I'm no Shakespeare scholar either, Michael, but over twenty years ago I read every play and most of [Shakespeare's] Sonnets under the guidance of Dr. Thelma Odle. Like Aldous Huxley, no intellectual lightweight he, I disagree with you. See Huxley's
Shakespeare and Religion, 1963." Is invoking Huxley's view of Shakespeare enough to neutralize Conniff's ubiquitous agnosticism? Probably not. To be certain, we'll see the tension between government and spirituality played out again this November.

Renick Stevenson, artist-in-residence of the Arts Center, hosts "Renick Stevenson's Circle of Friendship: Poetry and Music." Read and share your original poetry, prose, music and song. Renick Stevenson's roots in the Roaring Fork Valley are deep, mostly in people's hearts. If only he'd jettison that beanie...

I have a group of close buddies I get together with every year. We all grew up together in a small town in West Texas. Usually, we do Vegas, but we grew tired of the crowds and the heat and the long lines and the cab fares. So, this year, we did something different. We rented a condo in N. Lake Tahoe and we partied and gambled and played in Reno, and both north and south Lake Tahoe. I've been thinking about this last trip often, and I finally sat down to write a reflection of what I came away with, albeit a somewhat selfish reflection. Enjoy:....

Ink and papers, epic offers,
and a glass moon waltzing on the waters.
With a horse and carriage,
I was courting the marriage
of dreams in the wings,
of visions unseen.

Don't forget the whole idea of the Aspen Institute to begin with was "the Aspen Ideas as the cross-fertilization of minds." Co-founder Walter Paepcke's idea of the Idea was to bring together the best noggins across all kinds of disciplines--including the arts--and allow them to hammer away.
The Aspen Ideas Festival is, of course, that very idea made manifest in a conference now steaming into its third year. But Aspen resident Ken Adelman, the former United Nations ambassador and noted neoconservative, has also taken the notion of cross-fertilization into his beloved realm of the arts.

I’m a little neurotic, so when observing myself I’m my own worst critic. And maybe not always justifiably so. I was anxious, excited and concerned going into our fourth show. I’d planned to do the same set I’ve done previously. My challenge wasn’t to write new material to include jokes specific to “downvalley”, but to keep the material structurally the same and find myself present in the moment. I thought if I could find a “nowness” that my improvisational skills would just come out.
Naturally, I worked myself into a tizzy the week before the show only to break and calm the fuck down.

I don't care if you are Red or Blue. I don't give a flying flip if you are Republican or Democrat. I could care less if you are a Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, Muslim, Jew, Hindu, etc, etc. Why can't we just all agree that we have a very real opportunity here to tap into the scientific options on the table. Via science, we have the opportunity to turn the tide on incurable diseases.

Perhaps it is time for people to rise up and say, "this is my country, that is my government, that party of republicans is not mine... and that party of democrats is not mine, and those choices our President is making are not my choices!"
