Poetry Night at Zele Cafe has been popular with locals since its inception in the fall of 2006. Not only do the readings often draw a packed house, but they also expose the talents of many budding poets residing in the valley. Based on the events success, two local woman decided to give the community a forum specifically designed for poets looking to share their work with a greater audience. "Aspen Poets' Society was born of the desire to provide an electronic site for poets to share their original works with lovers of the written word – fellow poets and non-poets alike," writes the groups founders, Lisa Max Zimet and Kim Nuzzo. "A place where one can go any time of day or night, seven days a week, 24 hours a day. A place that knows no geographic boundaries." Click here for your morning dose of prose.
In view of Michael Conniff's correct observation that "'God' is not mentioned in any of Shakespeare's works," Post blogger Mitch Mulhall writes in comment #46, "I'm no Shakespeare scholar either, Michael, but over twenty years ago I read every play and most of [Shakespeare's] Sonnets under the guidance of Dr. Thelma Odle. Like Aldous Huxley, no intellectual lightweight he, I disagree with you. See Huxley's Shakespeare and Religion, 1963." Is invoking Huxley's view of Shakespeare enough to neutralize Conniff's ubiquitous agnosticism? Probably not. To be certain, we'll see the tension between government and spirituality played out again this November.

Also joining the conversation were Lisa Zimet of Zele and two members of the Aspen community, Cy Coleman and Tricia McKenzie.
Think Beatles tribute band for the Beatniks like Allen Ginsburg. Well, the Beats are back again this Sunday night for an encore performance at Zele’s Café in downtown Aspen. In the meantime, Tuesday night at Zele’s there will be a session of community blogging at the Zele Community Table with members of the Beat cast for a behind-the-scenes look at how the whole idea came together. The public is invited to the Zele Community Table for the session from 5:30-6:30 PM Tuesday evening.
Young and old packed Zele Café Sunday night for The Hudson Reed Ensemble performance of “The Beats…together again.” Those who ventured to the coffee shop were treated to an impassioned performance of seven poems complemented by a bassist who very nicely accentuating each poem’s mood.
The Hudson Reed Ensemble, Aspen's Resident Acting Company, is gearing up for several very different and entertaining programs this summer which are all free to the community.
First off is THE BEAT POETS REUNION performing at Zele coffee house. This half-hour program highlights the socially provocative & insightful poetry of the "Beat" poets of the 50's ...the fathers and mothers of the Hippie Movement. Beat Poets featured are: Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Diane di Prima, William S. Burroughs and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Played by Ed Foran, Kim Nuzzo ,Kathy Pelowski, Gary Morabito and Lee Sullivan. Performing on Sundays, July 16th and 30th at 9 p.m. at the Zele Cafe...121 South Galena. It will be VERY COOL DADDY!
