More than 450 flu clinics throughout the state have been cancelled due to a shortage of swine flu vaccine. Most of those clinics are in the Denver Metro Area----the largest population center, as the Center for Disease control tries to ramp up production of the vaccine for H1N1.
All this is not so unexpected; it’s been predicted for some time now that the separate flu shot for swine flu may take as long as next month to show up in clinics across the country…….much of the reason is that the same, relatively slow method used to produce the vaccine hasn’t changed in 40 years.
However, about 100 doses are expected to arrive in Pitkin County this week, with the mist spray version also available in Garfield county---but those will be used by health care workers already caring for ill patients.
We’ll keep you posted. Aspen Valley Hospital’s Ginny Dyche will be in tomorrow to answer your question about the flu clinics----and information about health fairs coming up….any questions? Send an email to news@aspenglenwood.com
The Division of Wildlife will be holding a public meeting in Aspen one week from Thursday-----to address the problem of bears; following the killing of a dozen bears by the DOW this season, after the animals broke into homes or attacked humans. The number of bear problems in the area is a big worry for the agency----which has the responsibility of trying to preserve the bear populations while protecting the public.
A poor berry crop forced the bears to forage in town for food this late summer and early Fall. Besides the 12 that had to be put down----more than 25 bears had to be re-located. The meeting at the Limelite lodge at 6:30 p.m. on October 15th is intended to better explain the agency’s policies to residents.
Maybe Aspen needs to market itself differently-----Keystone Resort is offering two free season ski passes, good at Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge and Keystone, to people who get married at the resort in Summit County.
Response has been good for couples thinking about tying the knot and hitting the slopes.
